Owned audience

An owned audience is the people you can reach directly, like your email list or opted-in WhatsApp contacts, without depending on a platform's algorithm.

Also called: first-party audience, fan list, direct audience

Why does it matter?

Followers on a platform are rented: the platform decides who sees your post. An email address or an opt-in lets you reach the person directly, on your schedule.

How do you build one?

Give people a reason to sign up at the moments they're most interested: a pre-save, a snippet, early access, a download or a discount.

Do you still need social media?

Yes. Social is where people find you; the owned audience is how you keep them.

Example

An artist with 50,000 Instagram followers and 2,000 email subscribers finds the email list brings more release-day streams than one feed post.
