360 deal

A 360 deal is a contract where a label takes a share of more than music sales and streams, such as touring, merch, brand deals and publishing.

Also called: 360-degree deal, multiple rights deal, multi-rights deal

Why do labels offer 360 deals?

Recorded music is only part of what an artist earns. Labels that invest in building an artist argue they should share in the shows, merch and brand deals that the building helps create.

What does the artist get?

Usually more money up front, a bigger team and more marketing. Some labels do take an active role in touring or merch; others take a share without doing much in those areas.

What should you check?

Exactly which income streams are covered, whether the label's share is of gross or net income, whether it does real work in those areas, and how long it lasts. A cut of your live income for years is a big ask if the label never books a show.

Example

A Delhi pop artist compares two offers: a recording deal, and a 360 deal with a larger advance that also takes a share of her shows and brand collabs.
